Where the Gesture Becomes Light
Onde o Gesto se Torna Luz
In this painting, I explore the moment when movement becomes more than movement — when it becomes expression. The dancer emerges from, and simultaneously seems to dissolve into, a space shaped by light, matter and fragmentation, as though her body were suspended somewhere between what we see and what we feel.
I worked primarily with a palette knife, allowing the impasto and physical texture of the paint to remain visible across the canvas. Geometric planes interrupt and subtly displace the figure, suggesting different moments within a single gesture and allowing figuration to move towards abstraction.
A palette of soft pinks, ochres, creams and warm yellows surrounds the figure with light, while the raised arm leads the eye upwards and extends the movement beyond the body itself.
Rather than simply portraying a dancer, I wanted to capture what remains after movement has passed: its energy, its delicacy, and that almost intangible moment where the gesture becomes light.
